I think this is pretty cool. I have 4 lava rocks in this picture, the two shinier ones are less than two months old, the one closest to the jar is around 10 years old. The dull stones are from the black sand beach. There was a sign that said, "don't take the sand" but it didn't mention stones. The sand we picked up on our 3 1/2 mile hike. Jordan didn't understand the black sand concept - she thought I was talking about rich, black soil and we see "black sand" all the time. This is a pretty clear picture of the process from magma to sand.
